Incline Village, NV Area Guide

Welcome to Incline Village! Located on the north shore of Lake Tahoe in Washoe County, Incline Village is home to stunning mountain retreats, soothing beaches, and a variety of recreational activities such as biking, hiking and skiing. As of 2000, the town has a population of approximately 10,000 people and is part of the Reno-Sparks Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area is named for the Great Incline Tramway built by loggers in 1878 (due to the steep land).

History

The Washoe and Paiute Indians were the first residents in the Lake Tahoe community, but as time passed many settlers began moving west into the Lake Tahoe area. The Incline Village area didn’t see a boom until the mid 1800s when the Village’s abundant supply of lumber was needed for the mines in Washoe Valley and Virginia City.

The town was named Incline Village when the logs were carried nearly 1400 feet vertically in order to reach the V Flume back in the mining days. In 1884 the settlement was officially put on the map when it was declared an election precinct and a post office site. By 1897 the area was left in ruins; the flumes were crumbling and the log chutes were left to rot and the area was abandoned to replenish the cut forests.

People didn’t start returning to the area until the 1930s when summer homes started being built in the area and Captain George Whittell built his stone castle on the shores of Sand Harbor. In the 1950s the Crystal Bay Development Company approached Captain Whittell about purchasing 9,000 acres of land to build a planned community. The sale was a success, and roads were built, a ski area was designed, beaches were developed and a golf course was planned. Custom homes and condos sprang up along Lakeshore Boulevard, schools were built, and Incline Village became a year-round community instead of just a summer spot. Today the future of Incline Village is bright, and the residents here make every effort to expand the area while keeping their unique history in tact.
