Reno, NV School Guide
With such a large variety of schools available in the Washoe County, you are sure to find the right type of institution for your family’s educational needs. There are several public and private schools for school-age children and four schools of higher education to choose from as well.
Public Schools
Washoe County School District provides public education options for students in the district which encompasses Reno, Sparks, Verdi, Incline Village, Empire, Wadsworth and Gerlach. The school has over 63,000 students enrolled, making it the second largest school district in the state of Nevada. The district consists of 64 elementary schools, one special education school, 15 middle schools, and 12 high schools plus a magnet school, an alternative education school, and a technical institute. Typically elementary schools include kindergarten through sixth grade students, middle school includes seventh and eighth grade, and high school is ninth through twelfth grade students (Damonte Ranch High School is an exception serving grades seven through twelve).
Private Schools
Holy Child Day Home School
Holy Child Day School serves preschool and kindergarten children and allows parents to pay tuition on a sliding scale based on household income. The school is licensed, nationally accredited, and operated by Catholic Community Services of North Nevada.
Brookfield School
Brookfield School opened in Reno in 1978; it is an independent, non-denominational school that currently serves 250 students in preschool through eighth grade. There is a separate campus for the three and four year old students (aptly named The Little Campus) where younger children are able to grow through a broad and diverse preschool curriculum that is a cut above the standard preschool curriculum. The school strives to foster personal and intellectual excellence among its students through fun filled activities and a strong curriculum.
St. Albert the Great School
St. Albert the Great first opened its doors first opened its doors in 1955 across from the University of Reno campus with 138 students enrolling the first year. In 1965 the school moved to its current location on St. Albert Drive and over 250 students are currently enrolled. The school serves grades kindergarten-eight and there is a Child Development Center next door for younger children as well. Along with a strong academic curriculum and solid religious teachings the school also offers a variety of extracurricular activities including physical education, computers, and music. Students are required to attend mass weekly.
Little Flower Catholic School
This school was founded in 1962 by four Sisters of Mercy from St. Joseph’s Convent in Ireland. The school’s staff has grown to 21 teachers and now serves over 290 students with the support of parish priests, an active Parents’ Club Organization and a School Board. Little Flower’s philosophy is based on knowledge, and faith and the school is certified by the Western Catholic Education Association.
Our Lady of the Snows
Our Lady of the Snows has operated for 58 years within the Reno-Sparks community and its students represent a cross-section of the various socio-economic levels in the area. There are currently 276 students enrolled learning with 8 full-time teachers, 10 part-time teachers, and six instructional aides. The school serves kindergarten through eighth grades and maintains an environment that nurtures intellect and faith.
Sage Ridge School
Sage Ridge is a coeducational college preparatory school that emphasizes the importance of classical liberal arts education to develop the minds, bodies, and souls of its enrollees. Serving grades 5-12, the school offers a variety of athletics programs and Advanced Placement courses for upper level students. The students participate in school-wide community service activities, the student-to-teacher ratio is an astonishing 1:10, and the school currently has a 100% college acceptance rate.
Bishop Manogue Catholic High School
Bishop Manogue is the only Catholic high school in Northern Nevada; it is a separately incorporated non-profit school operated under the Diocesan Bishop, Randolph R. Calvo. The school is accredited through the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools and collaborates with parents to foster academic excellence and Christian values. The school caters to students residing in the greater Reno-Sparks area, Truckee, Tahoe, and the Carson Valley area. Over the past five years 98% of its graduates have continued their studies at the university level. There are over 650 enrollees in attendance at Bishop Manogue and the school has received the “AAAA” rating from the Nevada Interscholastic Athletic Association.
The Church Academy
The Church Academy believes that curriculum should be customized to the needs of each individual child, thus each child is able to accelerate at their own rate. There is a diagnostic test to determine academic level, and children who learn quickly can advance at a faster rate. The school has been open since 1979, serves grades K-12, and implements the Accelerated Christian Education Curriculum.

Colleges and Universities
It is the mission of Morrison University to provide the proper knowledge and skills to its students to meet the growing needs of the Northern Nevada Business Community. Morrision is an independent university that offers Associate, Bachelor, and Master of Business Administration degrees, and it is the only school in Northern Nevada that offers a Fast Track program for accelerate learning.
Truckee Meadows Community College
Truckee Meadows continues to grow its course offerings to help prepare students for real world situations. Classes include university transfer programs, occupational training, career enhancement, and non-credit, just for fun classes. The school has over 50 degree and certificate programs to serve a student body of over 12,000 students looking for affordable education options. The school also offers flexible scheduling, a variety of class types (Internet, television, hands-on, etc.), and support services including job placement assistance and single-parent support.
University of Nevada-Reno
The University of Nevada-Reno attracts the brightest students from across the state and from around the world; there are over 70 undergraduate majors to choose from and 3,000 courses taught each year. The school is nestled on a beautiful 290-acre campus in a picturesque mountain setting that’s popular for outdoor recreational activities. The world-class faculty, excellent facilities, and tremendous cultural activities make University of Nevada-Reno a wonderful school to attend.
Apollo College
The philosophy of Apollo College is that the diversity of its student population fosters unique experiences for its students, allowing them to learn about different backgrounds, perspectives, and insights. The real-world education provided here is specially designed to promote interaction among the students so that knowledge can be shared. The curriculum is being updated continuously to allow students to receive the best hands-on, practical experiences they will need to be successful in their post-college careers.
